MedStar Health Thoracic Surgery at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center

MedStar Health has assembled the region’s largest team of fellowship-trained thoracic surgeons who provide treatment for the full array of benign and malignant lung, esophageal, and other thoracic diseases in adolescents and adults.

Our multidisciplinary care team provides an expanse of consultative, diagnostic, and surgical treatments that are tailored to your individual needs. We care for patients with common thoracic conditions including lung cancer, esophageal cancer, and GERD and provide treatment of rare conditions such as mesothelioma, thoracic outlet syndrome, and achalasia. Our surgeons offer the full spectrum of open, minimally invasive (including robotic, thoracoscopic and laparoscopic approaches), endoscopic and bronchoscopic surgical options.

Now one of these fellowship-trained thoracic surgeons, Puja Khaitan, MD, is seeing patients at MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center.

Why Choose Us?

  • Unmatched, Collaborative Expertise – Using a team approach, our fellowship-trained surgeons partner with physicians from disciplines including pulmonology, gastroenterology, medical oncology, and radiation oncology to develop a multidisciplinary personalized care plan specifically for you. Sub-specialty training allows our surgeons to offer an expanded range of services utilizing a robust array of therapeutic options.  In turn, our patients receive care from leading experts in the different areas of thoracic surgery.  This specialized approach to care allows us to offer cutting-edge treatment for all benign and malignant thoracic conditions.  We use enhanced recover after surgery (ERAS) protocols for many of our procedures that have allowed us to partner with patients to improve pain control, lessen the need for narcotic medications, and promote an overall faster recovery. Our multidisciplinary commitment to caring for the whole patient often translates into better outcomes and highly individualized treatments.
  • Patient-Centric Philosophy – Our motivation is simple: we want the best and safest possible result for you. As thoracic surgeons, we can positively impact your health by providing a diagnosis, potentially curing an underlying condition, or improving your quality of life. We are committed to educating you about and ensuring you have full understanding of your disease process and treatment options, so you remain actively involved in your care.  Ultimately, you must be well-informed and feel comfortable with whatever decisions are being made regarding your care. Keeping a consistent, open line of communication with you is paramount, which is why our team is available before and after surgery to answer all your questions.
  • High Volume – Our board-certified thoracic surgeons are some of the busiest in the greater Washington, D.C. area. Studies have shown that patients undergoing surgery for lung cancer and esophageal cancer have better outcomes when their surgery is performed at a high-volume center with a subspecialty trained surgeon. * In addition, we have a dedicated inpatient Thoracic Surgery unit at each of our hospitals where surgery is performed with specialty-trained nurses who know how to treat you after a complex, thoracic operations.  This is another example of how we strive to achieve the best possible, high-quality outcome for you.
  • Research-Inspired Care – Our thoracic surgeons participate in cutting-edge clinical trials and are leaders of a systemwide movement to incorporate novel robotic surgical technologies. As regular presenters at national and international meetings we maintain a practice that integrates the latest developments in thoracic surgery with evidence-based guidelines and protocols.  Through our partnership with MedStar Health Research Institute and Georgetown University, our team conducts innovative research studies on surgical techniques, enhanced recovery after surgery, and surgical outcomes.  Our physicians are not just reading about new protocols; they are leading, designing, and writing them.
  • Access and Convenience – We offer the full spectrum of thoracic surgical services for adolescents and adults at two MedStar locations across the Washington region: MedStar Georgetown University Hospital and MedStar Washington Hospital Center. Additionally, we maintain a practice at Reston Hospital Center and are in close collaboration with our thoracic surgery, pulmonology, and oncology colleagues at MedStar Baltimore. Our team approach to care ensures that patients can be seen promptly following referral.
