As part of our effort to promote all types of health in our community, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center provides a range of professional care and treatment for mental health problems including addiction. The hospital’s behavioral and mental health department offers both inpatient and outpatient services, allowing physicians, patients, and their families to choose among a range of flexible options for psychiatric care.
MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center’s behavioral and mental health department takes a multidisciplinary approach to mental health care. Psychiatrists and case managers work as a team with psychologists, social workers, clinical counselors, and psychiatric nurses and technicians. The psychiatric team works together with the patient and family members as appropriate to customize a treatment plan including counseling and psychological education, symptom management, supportive group therapy, expressive therapy, and medication education.
Inpatient: The 24-bed inpatient unit combines traditional services with innovative approaches to recovery. The unit’s soothing, home-like setting offers the support and resources needed for a successful return to community living.
Outpatient: Our partial hospitalization program is a hospital-based, intensive outpatient treatment program that provides a structured treatment setting for individuals who might otherwise require inpatient care or who are transitioning from recent inpatient care.
MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center’s behavioral health services department is known for its comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to inpatient mental health treatment. The department is committed to providing flexible solutions that meet each patient’s needs.
Our partial hospitalization program (PHP) is part of that commitment. We recognize that mental and emotional conditions exist along a spectrum. While some behavioral health issues might not require an inpatient approach, they may be too serious to manage through routine counseling alone. PHP bridges that gap: it is a hospital-based, intensive outpatient treatment program.
PHP is for individuals 18 and older who are suffering from significant emotional or mental distress that makes it difficult for them to manage their lives in a work, school, or home setting. Referrals can be made by individuals seeking treatment, physicians, therapists, or other healthcare professionals. Our team of professionals is available to help 24 hours a day.
