Since joining MedStar Health five years ago, MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center has seen a lot of changes leading to an abundance of national-recognized awards. We’re improving and we want you to know how. Just last year alone, MedStar Southern Maryland was credited as being one of the best hospitals in the country for Neurology & Neurosurgery by U.S.News & World Report, as well as a best regional hospital for the Washington, D.C. area. Awards

At MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center, we don’t just take acknowledgment seriously, we thrive on it. Since joining MedStar Health five years ago, our hospital has seen a lot of changes leading to an abundance of national and regionally-recognized awards for our clinical and operational excellence. We’re improving and we want you to know how. Below highlights some of the hospital's most recent awards. 

U.S. News and World Report Regional Rankings (2014, 2016, 2017, 2018)

Recognized as a top-performing hospital in the Washington, D.C. region and in Maryland. Over the years, the hospital has been known for high performance in the areas of Urology, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Gastroenterology and GI Surgery, Geriatrics and Nephrology. In addition, the hospital has been rated as high-performing with Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) and Heart Failure procedures.

Washington Regional Transplant Community Top 50 Hospitals (2017)

The Washington Regional Transplant Community (WRTC) recently recognized MedStar Southern Maryland for being among the Top 50 hospitals for notification and procurement. WRTC is responsible for the delicate and complicated process of finding donor organs for recipients on donor lists and coordinating the transfer of the organs to recipients, and our hospital is honored to be a key contributor in helping to bring the gift of life and aiding to this mission.

NICHE Designated Hospital, Level 4 (2017)

Nurses Improving Care for Healthsystem Elders (NICHE) is the leading nurse driven program designed to help hospitals and healthcare organizations improve the care of older adults.  The vision of NICHE is for all patients 65 and over to be given sensitive and exemplary care.

Maryland Quit, Fax To Assist Referral Award (2017)

The Respiratory Department of MedStar Southern Maryland was recognized and presented with the Maryland Quit, Fax To Assist Referral Award for Outstanding Record of Referrals to the Maryland Quitline for the 2017 fiscal year, coming in third in the state.  The Fax to Assist Program allows healthcare and non-healthcare professionals refer tobacco-using individuals to Free Maryland Tobacco Quitline Services to become tobacco-free.

American Heart Association Get with the Guidelines Gold Plus Achievement Award, Target Honor Roll Stroke (2014-2017) 

The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association recognizes award-winning hospitals for their success in using our programs to improve the quality of care for heart disease and stroke patients. Gold recognizes the performance of 24 consecutive months or more. Target: Stroke Honor Roll: Time to thrombolytic therapy within 60 minutes in 50 percent or more of acute ischemic stroke patients treated with IV tPA (current criteria and same volume thresholds).

Practice Greenhealth is the nation’s leading membership and networking organization for institutions in the healthcare community that have made a commitment to sustainable, eco-friendly practices.

The Joint Commission Top Performer (2014)

The Joint Commission’s Top Performer on Key Quality Measures® program recognizes accredited hospitals that attain excellence on accountability measure performance. The program is based on data reported in the previous year about evidence-based clinical processes for certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, inpatient psychiatric services, venous thromboembolism, stroke, perinatal care, immunization, tobacco treatment and substance use.

Accreditations

The Joint Commission (2015)

MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center is dedicated to providing our patients with the highest quality of medical and surgical care and has earned the Joint Commission's Gold Seal of Approval™ by demonstrating compliance with the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization's national standards for healthcare quality and safety. Founded in 1951, the Joint Commission is dedicated to continuously improving the safety and quality of the nation's health care through voluntary accreditation.

Chest Pain Center with Primary PCI (2012)

Hospitals awarded this designation have Primary PCI available 24/7 every day of the year. This means they have a call team made up of the cardiac cath lab staff and an interventional cardiologist who arrive at the facility within 30 minutes of STEMI activation. These facilities have formal agreements with the facilities that regularly refer STEMI patients for primary PCI. They will also have mapped their STEMI processes to maximize efficiencies which lead to quicker treatment and improved outcomes.

Primary Stroke Center (2012)

First hospital in Prince George's County to receive the designation.
