MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center needs volunteers to serve evenings and weekends at the Information Desk in the main lobby, the Labor and Delivery Desk, and the Emergency Room Registration Area. Evening and weekend hours are Monday through Friday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Weekend hours are Saturday and Sunday between 8:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Volunteers must be able to commit to serving 4 hours one day a week for 3 months. Volunteers will receive a free meal ticket whenever they volunteer. All volunteers must go through Employee Health to receive the mandatory flu shot, PPD, and Titer unless documentation is provided that tests have been completed.
Position Descriptions:
Information Desk Position:
Assist Guest Service Representatives in providing information and directions to visitors, guests, and patients with excellent customer service. Sign-in all visitors and issue visitor bands. Answer in-coming phone calls and transfer calls to patient rooms.
Labor and Delivery Desk Position:
Assist Nursing Units by greeting, directing, and providing information to visitors arriving for the Labor and Delivery Department and the Women and Newborns Center. Monitor and provide entrance to the Labor and Delivery Department and the Women and Newborns Center. Provide excellent customer service to visitors, guests, and patients entering and exiting the area.
Emergency Room Position:
Assist the Emergency Room Registration staff in quickly registering patients to be seen by the doctor. Sign-in all visitors and issue visitor bands. Escort family members and visitors to see patients in the Emergency Room patient care area. Provide excellent customer service in a calm compassionate manner.

The application can be mailed, faxed, emailed, scanned, or hand delivered to the hospital Information Desk. Once the application is received, the background check is submitted to the Human Resources Department.
When the background check clearance is returned, the applicant will be contacted to come to the hospital for a volunteer interview. Applicant must also complete a P.P.D. test, a titer, and a flu shot. A P.P.D is the skin test that is conducted to determine whether or not a person has been exposed to TB. A titer shows if a person has immunity to certain diseases. If it is determined that a person does not have immunity to a certain disease, then he/she may receive the vaccine from Employee Health.
The test are available free of charge in Employee Health from 7:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.
(NOTE: applicant must be able to return to the hospital 48 – 72 hours after the P.P.D. test to have it read).
When we receive the permission form from Employee Health the applicant will be contacted to start volunteer training. Volunteers must wear a volunteer smock. The smock is $25.00 and refundable after 3 months of volunteer service. The smock must also be returned in good condition with the identification badge.
