CLINTON, MD — US News and World report has released its annual "Best Hospitals" list, and MedStar Southern Maryland Hospital Center has been honored as a 2013 "Best Regional Hospital." The hospital made the top list in two geographical areas, ranking twenty-first in Maryland and fourteenth in the Washington, DC metropolitan region. It was further recognized as a "high performing hospital" in neurology and neurosurgery.
US News collects data about hospital performance in 16 specialties, using data such as patient mortality and patient safety indicators to identify the hospitals that perform best on especially challenging cases in a given specialty. Physicians' surveys that ask doctors to list the best hospitals in their specialty by reputation are also factored in. The top 50 performers in a given specialty are nationally ranked, and hospitals in the top 25 percent are listed as "high performing" in that specialty.
Nearly 4,800 hospitals nationwide were evaluated for inclusion in this year's rankings. Of those, 732 hospitals met the criteria to be designated as "Best Regional Hospitals" by being nationally ranked or "high performing" in at least one specialty area.
“A reputation for quality is not built in a day, or even in a year. The national attention our hospital has begun to receive is the result of a long-term, strategic effort and unwavering dedication to providing the highest quality medical and surgical care for our region's residents.”
-Hospital President Michael J. Chiaramonte, MBA
